ARTIST STATEMENT:
Over the past 6 years I have been engaged with a series of public interventions under the title “Basics”, exploring an abstracted notion of form, space and utility in public sculpture. Initially conceived as part of a larger installation for the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest, Romania, the series has since had over 50 iterations realized throughout the United States. All “Basics” sculptures are unique to their site and are constructed on site in a tried and tested method out of regular 2×4 construction lumber.
In consideration of the curatorial theme “Tradition” this sculpture is not only constructed out of the most common and traditional framing material in the North American context, but in fact takes a common everyday element of the built environment, the 2×4 wall frame, and assemble it in a cascading and rotating assembly that is sculptural in its formal expression, while celebrating the very means of everyday construction.
